Safety switches

A safety switch watches for electricity leaking where it shouldn't, such as through a person, and cuts the power in a fraction of a second. Many older homes have none, or only one.

Signs it's time.

Any one of these is a good reason to have an electrician take a look.

  • No safety switches on your switchboard
  • One safety switch covering the whole house
  • A safety switch that trips for no obvious reason
  • A test button that hasn't been pressed in years
  • You've just bought, or are renting out, an older home
  • Young kids or older people in the house

Always included.

Whatever the size of the job.

  • Safety switches covering power and lighting circuits
  • Each one tested with proper equipment, not just the button
  • Nuisance tripping tracked down
  • Circuits labelled, so you know what each switch covers
  • A quick lesson on testing them yourself
  • A Certificate of Electrical Safety

You book. We sign it off.

  5. Tested and certified

Each switch tested and labelled, and your certificate emailed.

A fixed price. Here's what sets it.

Every house is different, so we price the job in front of us. These are the things that move it.

  • Room left in your switchboard
  • How many circuits need protecting
  • Faults found on circuits during testing
  • Whether the board needs replacing first

You get a fixed, written price before any work starts, with anything optional listed separately. If we find something unexpected once we start, we stop and talk to you before doing anything extra.

All work is done to AS/NZS 3000, the Australian wiring rules.

How often should I test my safety switch?

Pressing the test button every three months is a good habit. It should trip straight away. If it doesn't, call an electrician.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

Usually an appliance, or a damp outdoor fitting, with a fault. Switch everything off on that circuit and reset it; if it holds, turn things back on one at a time. If it still trips, we'll find the cause.

Is a safety switch the same as a circuit breaker?

No. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overloads. A safety switch protects people from electric shock. Many modern devices do both jobs in one.
